âI SURE WOULD feel better if I could go with you, but those test results at my officeâ¦.â Danâs voice mirrored his concern about my heading out into the far reaches of the bayou alone, as we made our way toward the back entrance to the hotel.
âNo, no. Go take care of your business. Donât worry about me. Iâll be back shortly. Wonât take me long. Itâs really not that far to Aunt Darnieâs. Iâm a bayou girl. Iâll be okay.â
He opened the door for me. âI need to get something from my car before I go back to the office.â
During dinner the rain had downshifted to mere spits, and lightning flickered in the distance. The distant thunder sounded like the rumblings of an upset stomach. The heat and humidity engulfed us like a super sauna. Night had not completely set in, although the clouds blocked the remaining sunlight. The late twilight was murky, sights and sounds muffled. The parking lot lights had come on automatically, their globes surrounded by a damp haze.
Heâd barely closed the door behind us, when Stella came storming out. She gave us both the stink eye and continued across the wet parking lot and down the lighted path leading to her cottage.
âGuess sheâs still stewing,â I commented. âDidnât even speak to you, and youâre a paying guest.â Iâd never told him Iâd overheard her conversation with him and had an idea what had been going on.
âLucky me.â He twisted his lips in a wry smile. âShe didnât speak to you either. She mad at you about something?â
âIâm at the top of her doo doo list right now. Had to ream her out about her treatment of a couple of the other employees.â I punched the remote to open the garage door. âSee you later. Thanks for dinner.â
As I backed my cream colored Cadillac SUV out of my garage, I saw the lights flash on Stellaâs vehicle. Probably heading for a bar to find some male companionship to sooth her ego.
If my own personal weather radar was working, I should be able to get to Aunt Darnieâs, get her loaded into my car, and be back at the hotel before the next deluge hit.
I drove through Frenchyâs Landing. Most of the businesses were closed for the night, many of them already boarded up, sand bags stacked at their doors, but the bars were doing a rambunctious business. Beer signs blinked in several windows, and the parking lots were lighted. Coming up on the intersection where Evangeline met Crescent, I noticed a silver Mercedes sportscar barreling toward the Stop sign at the junction, its driver clearly not slowing down. Even though I had the right of way, I touched my brakes. Streetlights illuminated the intersection, so there was no missing the big red sign.
The driver of the oncoming car slammed on the brakes at the last minute. Tires screamed. The car swung three hundred sixty degrees, sliding and slewing on the wet pavement, fishtailing through the intersection. It rocked to a screeching halt.
